Understanding the Law and How it Applies to this Case

Illegal tying

Tying, in short, happens when a company as a precondition of purchasing or obtaining services, that other services must be purchased, and must be purchased from the seller.  In this case, the class action party believes that it is unlawful for Charter Cable to charge as they do for a box that their premium services are unusable without. Further, as Charter does not allow patrons to purchase a box or provide their own, the rental policy is the only way in which the service may be used. The tying refers to the manner in which the cable service is inherently TIED to the rental of the box and how one is incompatible and worthless without the other.
